阿公與我 Grandpa

在美國長大的年輕人，與祖父母互 的機會愈來愈稀少了。因為他們可能遠在異國，或早已過世。即使他們與我們同住，語言障礙也使雙方難以彼此溝通。然而，祖父母實在有太多值得汲取的人生經驗。我們可以從中尋見許多優良的傳統，例如：根、文化認同，以及從何處來，往何處去。
Grandpa lived with us, But it was hard for us to communicate With his Taiwanese and my English.
The most interaction we had was At the dinner table-when he would try To pile my rice bowl with more food.
He was always up before any of us; Early in the morning as he'd always say, "For the freshest air of the day!"
When he wasn't in the garden, He shuffled around the house, In the slippers that he used all day long.
One day, when I came back from school, I saw Grandpa sitting amongst old photos, With tears down his wrinkled face.
Too embarrassed to ask him directly, I ran into the kitchen, "Mom, Grandpa's crying!" Mom told me that Grandpa missed Grandma.
I asked, "Anything I can do for Grandpa?" "Why don't you just go over and sit by him? Perhaps your company is the best."
I sat with Grandpa there on that porch For quite a while-the silence stretched Over us like a canopy of quiet understanding.
Later, Mom and Dad joined us, and I asked them to translate Grandpa's stories of His childhood, struggles and accomplishments.
I learned about Grandpa in those moments- Yet, I also learned about me . . . Beyond the things shared to the things unspoken.
阿公跟我們一起住， 但我的英語很難和他的台語搭上線。
我們最常有的互 是在晚餐桌上—— 當他想辦法要把更多食物堆到我的飯碗裏。
他總是比我們全家人都早起； 他一大清早的口頭禪是： 「享受一天中最新鮮的空氣！」
他如果不是在院子裏做園藝， 就是在屋子裏四處走 ， 穿著他那雙成天不離腳的拖鞋。
有一天，我放學回來時， 看見阿公坐在一大堆老照片中間， 淚水從他皺紋滿佈的臉頰潸潸滑落。
我不好意思直接問他， 就跑到廚房，「媽咪，阿公在哭！」 媽咪告訴我，阿公在想念阿媽。 我問：「我可以為阿公做什麼？」 「你何不過去陪他坐坐？ 說不定你的陪伴正是他最需要的。」
我陪阿公坐在那門廊上好一陣子—— 心照不宣的靜默，有如樹蔭般遮蔽著我們倆。
後來，媽咪和爹地也來了，我請他們幫我翻譯， 聽了阿公成長、奮鬥、成家立業的故事。
在那時刻，我終於認識了阿公， 然而，我也更深認識了自己， 除了那些被說出來的，還有那些沒被說出來的。
